2010 RA Cluster of The Year!

Winterport Cluster was awarded “The 2010 Cluster of The Year” award by Reston Association for all of the environmentally friendly work that the Landscape & Grounds Committee (LGC), Co-Chaired by Christina Yacobi and Susan Thomas, did in removing 2 of RA’s banned invasive exotic plants – English ivy and bamboo. The LGC worked to forge a partnership with RA’s Environmental Services Division to help eradcate approximately 1,000 sf of English ivy from the Cluster natural area and adjoining RA property, as well as also removing a large patch of approximately 1,000 sf of bamboo which bordered a neighboring Cluster’s property. The LGC worked to help further educate the residents about these invasive plants and encourage their participation in their removal. Through the tireless efforts of a few willing residents to pull English ivy and the Board’s willingness to agree to help by approving some professional removal, these efforts are the first step towards restoring our Cluster natural areas for both residents and wildlife alike! Thanks to those resilient volunteers!!! Here’s to more great team work in the year’s to come – Way to go Winterport Cluster!
